Information On Demand is a strategy that addresses the CEO's number one pain point — unlocking and extracting value from information to globalize and integrate their business processes and become more innovative. This strategy focuses on:
- Getting the right information to the right people at the right time.
- Addressing the need to integrate information horizontally.
- Integrating, analyzing, and optimizing heterogeneous types and sources of business information throughout its lifecycle to manage risk and create new business insight.
Today’s business challenges
Today’s manufacturers have never been under more pressure. Competition is global, customers are fickle and demanding, and financial markets are unforgiving.
The answer? Repeatedly delivering the right product at the right time and at the right price. However, achieving this is far from easy. Successfully balancing increasing product and process complexity with rising performance and quality requirements is a challenge.
These pressures are forcing fundamental changes in the way companies are structured and in the way they conduct business. The result is a new global business model based on cooperation, competition and the transformation of manufacturing industries into collaborative communities working within, and beyond, company boundaries.

The product development differentiator
It is estimated that 80 percent of product costs are determined early in the product lifecycle, leading many companies to look for ways to front-load product development decisions to help meet time-to-market, quality and cost issues.
It is estimated that 80 percent of product costs are determined early in the product lifecycle, leading many companies to look for ways to front-load product development decisions to help meet time-to-market, quality and cost issues.
Maintenance costs are also escalating as product complexity increases. The amplified effect of decisions made during the product development process on downstream business metrics means that ‘building in’ quality during the early stages has never been more important. Real-time collaboration, appropriate simulation tools and a significant reduction in the number of physical prototypes through virtual prototyping are key initiatives in this regard

"Doing IT all by yourself isn't always EASY ...."
Entrepreneurs are usually "do-it-your-selfers"!
A story about "Kristen", a "do-it-yourselfer"! Her success in operating an alternative fashion clothing boutique has led her to open a second store.
Her business relies on repeat-customers, because of which she keeps extensive information on her customers - their styles and buying preferences. To bring in new business, she uses the web as a showcase - to spark interest, drive foot traffic to the store, and phone calls for more information.
But the technological challenges are daunting (to say the least)! She needs:

- an email system that will allow staff to communicate with clients.

As with many small business owners, "Kristen" operates on a very tight budget, and she cannot afford the hassle and expense of a complex IT solution or a staff to manage it.
An affordable solution exists - it does not overwhelm or restrict. This solution includes:

Why do Projects Fail???
Projects, across the globe, fail and waste million$ of dollar$ due to poor requirements definition – this brings into focus the role of a Business Analyst and competencies necessary.
How can a Business Analyst - or anybody for that matter, be expected to perform when their required competencies have not been established?
Put very simply: A Business Analyst acts as a translator / liaison between the customer/end-user and the IT group (attempting to fulfill needs).
According to International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA – http://www.iiba.com/ ), BAs are “responsible for identifying the business needs of their clients and stake-holders, to determine solutions to business problems – they elicit, analyze, validate and document business-organizational-operational requirements.”
For organizations to be successful, there are two sets of competencies that have to be clearly defined:
Firstly, there are competencies that are common to most jobs/positions – they identify behaviors required, for example, communication and collaboration skills. All participants / employees should possess these skills/competencies, and be able to contribute to the success of the organization.
Second, there are those competencies that address success for a certain job. These functional competencies identify an individual’s ability to perform a set of activities based on their job!
Competency consists of three components:
- Knowledge (what is required to be done / achieved?)
- Skill (how is it to be achieved?)
- Ability (how much can be done / achieved?)
Competencies that a Business Analyst should possess are:
- Eliciting Requirements: Requirements can be conditions, functionality, products or services for internal or external use - needed by a user or client to solve a business problem or achieve a business activity, and they are tied to the needs of business, rather than the constraints imposed by technology. This means that the business analyst’s job has more to do with identifying the desired results than the actions or resources required to reach these results—that’s someone else’s job. The purpose of gathering requirements is to provide an understanding of the problem or opportunity before trying to propose the solution.
- Creating the Business Requirements Document (BRD): It is an exhaustive written study of all facets of regulatory, business, user, functional or non-functional requirements and provides insight into both the As-Is and To-Be states of the business area.
- Structured Analysis: is the art of Modeling. It is used to support and enhance text-based requirements, help identify and validate requirements, document & communicate requirements and, finally organize information into coherent ideas. Common models include business, process, data and workflow.
- Object-oriented Analysis is the clear understanding of both process and data modeling techniques, including functional decomposition. It involves identifying the as-is, then developing activity diagrams, and finally designing to-be end-result – done in consultation business-users and technical personnel.
- Testing involves validation whether requirements have been met – develop test-scripts, plans, scenarios, based on as-is as well as to-be models. Should be done in iterative stages to ensure that, by following the requirements, the desired deliverables will be met.
- Black Box Testing is essentially the “checks and balances”. Herein, the item is not visible, only objectives of the business are validated for, for example, time required to fill in a report, that report being approved/rejected, and fulfillment --- would be tested for.
- Glass Box Testing is “looking under the hood”. In case of an IT-project, this would mean assessing the design, code and architecture.
- End-user Support involves the participation of the BA in the training of the end-user, along with the Training-team. This helps the end-user and Training-team to fully understand business requirement and create appropriate manuals and reference material.
- IT Fluency goes a long way in translating business-requirements that can be understood by the “techies”.
- Business Process Re-Engineering is the phase in which BAs flesh-out problems, AND identify opportunities. BPR uses a variety of modeling techniques in order to look at the bigger picture, BUT still think tactically!

Business Flexibility ... need of the hour ...
Today's global conditions warrants that businesses should be flexible and able to respond to the ever-changing regulations, set by government and other authorities .....
IBM WebSphere Business Modeler is a software tool that provides modeling, simulation and collaboration capabilities that:
- Enables you to achieve regulatory compliance with less time and expense through well-documented, auditable processes
- Simulates process changes, and assesses impacts on costs, resource utilization and cycle times prior to deployment
- Helps reduce risk by simulating market changes against current process models
- Improves your company’s scorecard by defining KPIs
- Enables you to more effectively deploy valuable skills to the areas where they’re best used
Create and maintain business processes that accurately reflect your organization’s business strategy.
Current business processes may be inflexible and dis-connected from other departments (within the organization), OR from supplier, customers, partners!
Mergers and acquisitions also result in many redundant processes — affecting operating efficiency, productivity and the organization's bottom-line.
Optimizing business processes helps an organization reduce costs. An important step, in this direction, is implementing Business Process Management (BPM), through a Service oriented Architecture (SOA).

Change is the only CONSTANT .....
yes, Change is the only CONSTANT!
And only those creatures - businesses included, that can recognize and adapt to change, WILL lead the others, through crisis and turmoil, into the goodness of the here/there-after!
One might have a Strategy and a Vision(ssssssssss) ---- knowing exactly where they are, what they want to do, and where they are going, BUT .....
..... what happens when a CRISIS strikes - economic, or terror, or nature!
One can only guesstimate losses - money, people, etc., etc., etc., ....
We all live in a "market", with the ultimate aim being that of promoting each-self, over another --- and this brings in a cost-factor (monies, blood-sweat-n-tears)
----- these COSTS have to be borne to overcome competition, threats (to self / livelihood)
------- resulting in individuals / businesses formulating STRATEGIES
--------- complete, with Mission & Vision statements .....
Resulting in like-minded individuals / businesses "coming together" to scratch each other's backs ..... these relationships have to align with the sole purpose of "beating the competion"!
... more to come ..... CHANGE is .....
